A walk in the heart of the city

Enjoy Padua on a tour of the most famous and symbolic places and monuments.

The walk begins at Prato della Valle, one of the largest and most impressive squares in Europe. A few steps away, admire the Basilica of Sant’Antonio, a destination for pilgrims from all over the world. Don’t miss a visit to the Botanical Garden, the oldest university garden in the world, which is home to rare plants, including the famous “Goethe Palmtree” and the magnificent Biodiversity Greenhouse.

Continue towards Palazzo del Bo, the historic seat of the University of Padua, where Galileo Galilei once taught. From here, head towards the picturesque Jewish ghetto with its alleyways and stores and on to Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, where lively markets are held daily.

Admire the Palazzo della Ragione with its giant wooden horse and the astrological cycle captured in the wall paintings. Finally, end the tour at the Scrovegni Chapel with frescoes by Giotto, a must-see masterpiece of Italian art.

In the “Sottosalone”, the historic market hall directly under the Palazzo della Ragione, you will find all the local delicacies, from Prosciutto Veneto DOP to cheeses such as Asiago and Montasio.

For a coffee break full of history and charm, head to the famous Caffè Pedrocchi and enjoy the typical mint-flavored coffee. Then head straight to the Bar degli Osei in Piazza dei Frutti or the Bar Nazionale in Piazza delle Erbe for a “Spritz”.

 

The “somewhat different” Padua

Discover some of the city’s hidden jewels that are less well-known and off the beaten tourist track.

Visit the Odeo Cornaro, a 16th-century masterpiece near the Basilica del Santo, which was once used for theatrical performances.

Continue to the Specola, the old astronomical observatory built on the tower of the medieval castle. A few steps away is the Oratory of San Michele, a treasure chest of 14th century frescoes that are part of the Padova Urbs Picta cycle.

Also discover the Musme, Museum of the History of Medicine, and finish with the brand new and interactive MNU, Museum of Nature and Man, near the Scrovegni Chapel.
